PhD Forum Abstract: The Effects of the Thermal Environment on Sleep and Novel Control Solutions

Published in ACM Sustainability Week Companion '26, 2026

Abstract: Sleep quality is strongly affected by indoor environmental conditions, yet current residential solutions rely largely on static temperature settings that ignore sleep-stage dynamics and individual differences. My Ph.D. research studies how to improve sleep in Singapore’s hot-humid residential context through three connected phases: (1) the evaluation of a Just-in-Time Adaptive Intervention (JITAI) system that provides timely suggestions to improve bedroom environmental quality; (2) the field evaluation of dynamic bedroom air-temperature control during sleep; and (3) the development of a novel personal comfort modeling method. The abstract also summarizes the current progress and planned next steps for each phase.
